Throbbing Gristle es una banda Británica de música experimental e industrial, Avant-Garde y artes visuales, que evolucionó, de el grupo de arte y performance "COUM Transmissions".
Los miembros fundadores de Throbbing Gristle fueron:

El nombre del grupo es una -jerga- británica para un "pene erecto".
Los controversiales performances, y el uso de varias imágenes perturbadoras, incluyéndo pornografía y fotográfías de campos de concentración nazi, dieron al grupo una notoria reputación. Sin embargo, el grupo siempre sostuvo que su misión era retar y explorar los lados más oscuros y obsesivos de la condición humana (en vez de hacer música atractiva).
Throbbing Gristle fue pionero en el uso de samples pre-grabados y uso de efectos especiales para producir un trasfondo distintivo y altamente distorsionado, usualmente acompañado por letras cantadas o habladas por Genesis P-Orridge.
En 1977 lanzaron su grabación debut, "2nd Annual Report. Aunque inicialmente solo se fabricaron 786 copias en la disquera de la banda, "Industrial Records", el álbum tuvo suficiente demanda como para relanzarlo posteriormente.
Throbbing Gristle se separó en 1981, con los fundadores Genesis P-Orridge y Peter Christopherson formando Psychic TV, mientras que Cosey Fanni Tutti y Chris Carter continuaron grabando juntos bajo el nombre de Chris and Cosey. Christopherson luego formó la banda Coil con su compañero de Psychic TV, John Balance.

Una secuela a este set, crónica de las últimas 10 presentaciones, fue lanzado como TG+. Estos lanzamientos acumulanron grabaciones que habían sido originalmente lanzados en cassette o álbumos de vinilo exclusivamente, algunos de carácter oficial, otros no. Luego de mucho tiempo fuera de circulación, estos lanzamientos crearon un nuevo interés en la banda.
Throbbing Gristle estaba programado para hacer una presentación en mayo del 2004 en el festival RE~TG, pero el festival fue cancelado debido a costos en aumento y complicaciones de horario. Decidieron reunirse de igual forma y prepararon un show en el hotel Astoria en Londres, el 16 de mayo del 2004, mismo día que tenían programada su presentación en el RE~TG.
El show fue gratuito, pero abierto únicamente para aquellos que tenían boletos para el RE~TG, tanto aquellos que recibieron un reembolso como quienes transfirieron su boleto al show de reunión final de Throbbing Gristle en el festival All Tomorrow's Parties, en abril del 2005. El show fue filmado por la banda, y fué lanzado en DVD en el 2006. Fue la primera presentación en vivo de Throbbing Gristle en casi 23 años.
En el 2006, la banda terminó la grabación de su primer álbum de estudio en casi 25 años. Titulado Part Two, es un set que fué lanzado por Mute el 20 de marzo del 2006.
